Nor'easter batters U.S. Northeast, causing fatalities and widespread flooding
A powerful nor'easter has battered the U.S. Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts, causing widespread destruction, flooding, and fatalities. The storm resulted in at least one death in Brooklyn, where Leighton Brown, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority, was killed by a falling tree.
Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency to manage the impact of coastal flooding, high winds, and heavy rainfall. In New Jersey, wind gusts reached 74 mph, and some areas experienced flooding comparable to Superstorm Sandy. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers activated hurricane barriers in Connecticut and Massachusetts to mitigate surge risks.
Infrastructure and travel were heavily disrupted. Over 100,000 customers across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic experienced power outages, with significant outages reported in New Jersey and Staten Island. The aviation sector faced massive delays, with more than 4,000 flight delays and over 500 cancellations reported across the country.
While the storm is beginning to weaken and move northeast toward the Gulf of Maine, coastal flood alerts and high surf warnings remain in effect for parts of New England.
