Northeastern Brazilian authors highlight diverse contemporary literature
Contemporary independent literature from Northeastern Brazil is showcasing a diverse range of themes, moving beyond traditional narratives of drought and the sertão to include urban social mobility, political fables, and magical realism.
Among the notable voices is Rafael Caneca, whose debut novel ‘Não volte sem ele’ (published by Editora Mondru) explores the historical violence of concentration camps established in Ceará during the 1932 drought. The story follows a young man searching for his missing brother, uncovering state violence against the poor.
Additionally, Zulmira Correia’s work, ‘A duração entre um fósforo e outro’, won the poetry category of the Tato Literário award. Her writing utilizes an experimental style that blends poetic prose with free verse to explore complex mental and narrative processes.
