Northern Archaeological Depot in Nuis to undergo sustainable renovation
The Northern Archaeological Depot (NAD) in Nuis will undergo a major renovation and expansion to ensure the long-term preservation of archaeological finds from the northern Netherlands. The provinces of Groningen, Fryslân, and Drenthe have selected DAAD Architecten to design the sustainable and future-proof complex.
The project involves replacing one of the depot's three existing warehouses with a new building that will connect the remaining two renovated structures into a single modern complex. The renovation focuses on circularity, with an emphasis on reusing existing building components and materials on-site.
The upgraded facility is designed to meet modern standards for collection management and sustainability, securing the preservation of artifacts—including stone tools, pottery, metal objects, and organic remains—for the next thirty years. Additionally, the new design will provide improved space for presenting findings to schools and other visitors.
