Northern Bald Ibises undergo assisted migration in Catalonia
The population of Northern Bald Ibises in Catalonia is set to expand through a specialized assisted migration project. Because these reintroduced birds have not yet naturally internalized their migratory routes, the Austrian WaldrappTeam utilizes ultralight aircraft piloted by caregivers to guide young ibises along their path.
This year, the migration route will pass through Alt Empordà in Girona, with the aircraft scheduled to land at the Ordis aeroclub. As part of an extraordinary stop, 15 participating ibises will remain at the Torre Mornau site to join a conservation project led by the Fundació Alive and the Generalitat. This initiative aims to strengthen the existing population established in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà.
