Northern Canada receives major infrastructure and development funding

The federal regional-development agency FedNor has announced $20.53 million for 22 projects across Northern Ontario. Led by Community Futures Development Corporations, these initiatives aim to expand business advisory services, financing, and community economic development. The funding is distributed through the Community Futures Program, Regional Economic Growth through Innovation, and the Northern Ontario Development Program.

In a separate regional development announcement, the federal government, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association have committed $77 million to construct a small-craft harbour in Arctic Bay. Expected to be completed by 2030, the project includes a breakwater, launch ramp, fixed and floating wharves, and dredging of the harbour basin. Pilitak Enterprises Ltd. has been contracted for the construction.

The Arctic Bay project is part of the Sinaa Agreement, an Inuit-led marine conservation initiative. It is designed to support fishing, tourism, marine transportation, and cultural activities while addressing food security and sovereignty for the region.
