Northern Cape cuts education funding amid South African budget pressures
The Northern Cape has become the only province in South Africa to decrease its education expenditure during the 2024-2025 fiscal year. According to financial statistics from Statistics South Africa, the province’s education spending dropped by 2.1% to R8,758 million, representing a reduction of R185 million.
This contraction contrasts with the other eight provinces, which all expanded their education funding. Nationally, provincial expenditure rose by 2.9% to R763,435 million, with education and health combined absorbing 75.8% of all provincial operating and capital expenditure.
The budget reduction in the Northern Cape highlights significant fiscal pressures. While education spending was trimmed, the province’s employee wage bill grew by 5.1% to R12,735 million. This increase in payroll commitments has contributed to a broader national trend where rising wage bills consume a large portion of provincial budgets, forcing cuts in the purchase of operational goods and services.
