Nigeria police arrest man over viral video threatening Christian attacks

The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun following the circulation of a viral video in which he allegedly led a group of youths in chants calling for the killing of Christians. The footage shows individuals wearing uniforms associated with the First Aid Group of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) demanding AK-47 rifles to attack worshippers in Enugu and Jos.

Various Nigerian organizations, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), have called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the incident. These groups emphasized that the threats should not be dismissed as mere youthful misconduct but treated as a serious security concern.

Leadership of the JIBWIS movement has distanced the organization from the video, stating that the inflammatory remarks do not represent their official views or values. Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, the head of the movement, condemned the footage and suggested that the incident might have been staged by external actors to damage the group's reputation.
