Northern Cretan Axis infrastructure projects face accessibility and cost concerns

Ongoing infrastructure developments and safety interventions on the Northern Cretan Axis (VOAK) have sparked discussions regarding regional accessibility and project planning. Stratos Flemetakis, President of the Crete Development Company, has called for the creation of a small, functional hub at the Agioi Pantes exit in Apokoronos. He argues that current road safety measures, specifically the placement of bollards on the dividing line, have effectively blocked access to Chania for nine villages, affecting residents and businesses.

Separately, Transport Minister Christos Dimas inspected construction sites along the axis, noting that the Rethymno bypass is progressing according to schedule. However, critics have raised concerns regarding the high costs and technical complexities of the new road layout, including the need for tunnels and bridges. There are also ongoing debates regarding the efficiency of the new alignment compared to upgrading the existing road, as well as the lack of progress on the Souda–Chania Airport connection.
