Northern Cyprus Assembly to reconsider mixed voting law
The debate over the removal of the mixed voting system in Northern Cyprus has resurfaced following the return of the Election and Referendum Law to the Assembly by President Tufan Erhürman. The proposed changes, which aim to abolish mixed voting, are expected to be reconsidered by the Assembly on September 29.
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Ongun Talat expressed opposition to the timing of the amendment, arguing that changing fundamental electoral rules shortly before an election violates democratic norms. While Talat noted that the CTP is not ideologically opposed to removing the mixed voting system, the party maintains that such significant reforms should be part of a broader electoral overhaul rather than a last-minute adjustment. Talat suggested that the government intends to pass the law without making further modifications, noting that the YDP has indicated it will support the removal despite previously withdrawing from the government.
