Northern Cyprus faces human trafficking and youth migration challenges
In Northern Cyprus, political figures and researchers are highlighting critical social issues affecting human rights and the younger generation. Fazilet Özdenefe, a CTP Member of Parliament candidate, addressed concerns raised in the U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons Report. She noted that issues such as sex slavery, forced labor, and exploitation in the service and construction sectors remain persistent.
To combat these issues, Özdenefe announced plans to halt new nightclub licenses and implement stricter inspections of existing establishments regarding human rights and working conditions. Proposed reforms to the Nightclubs and Similar Entertainment Venues Law aim to strengthen sanctions against exploitative practices like passport confiscation and debt bondage.
Separately, research conducted by Sivil Alan and Infakto indicates significant dissatisfaction among youth in Northern Cyprus. A study of 752 individuals aged 15–24 found that 71% plan to emigrate in the future. Key drivers for this trend include educational deficiencies, such as curricula that do not meet modern job market needs, overcrowded classrooms, and a lack of guidance counselors to address rising issues like school violence.
