Dogus IVF Centre linked to major donor scandal in northern Cyprus

An investigation by the BBC has revealed a major scandal involving fertility clinics in northern Cyprus, where at least 30 children are believed to have been conceived using incorrect sperm or egg donors. The majority of the affected families are British nationals who had carefully selected anonymous donors based on specific medical histories, physical appearances, and educational backgrounds from international databases.

DNA testing conducted on at least 11 of the children revealed genetic ancestry from Turkey and surrounding regions, contradicting the Western European heritage promised by the clinics. Half of the reported cases are linked to the Dogus IVF Centre in Nicosia. The clinic has reportedly been blacklisted by Cryos International, the world’s largest sperm bank, since 2016.

Several staff members, including Dr. Firdevs Uguz Tip, Dr. Sevket Alpturk, and patient coordinator Julie Hodson, have been identified in connection with the care of many affected patients. While Dr. Tip has denied any wrongdoing, the British Fertility Society has described the findings as ‘absolutely horrific,’ suggesting a systemic issue within the region's loosely regulated medical tourism industry.
