Northern Cyprus leaders debate response to ship disaster

Political figures in Northern Cyprus are divided in their assessment of the government's response to a recent ship disaster off the coast of Kyrenia.

Aral Moral, spokesperson for the Halkın Partisi, criticized the administration for management failures, stating that the government has been defined by crises, corruption, and a lack of meritocracy rather than effective leadership. He argued that the inability to organize a response and communicate effectively with victims' families highlights systemic weaknesses.

In contrast, political communication expert Uğraş Beratlı defended Prime Minister Ünal Üstel’s crisis management, suggesting the opposition is using the tragedy for political pressure. While Beratlı acknowledged the disaster reveals systemic issues across multiple sectors, he called for the implementation of rigorous transportation safety standards across all modes of transit, including maritime, air, and land, to prevent future incidents.
