Northern Cyprus opposition leaders urge early general election
Yeniden Doğurus Partisi (YDP) chairman Erhan Arıklı said the current five‑year government term should be shortened, arguing that an early election would benefit the country and improve representation of small parties. He warned that delaying the vote creates planning problems and called for the opening of electoral alliances and possible reforms to the election threshold.
Halkın Partisi (HP) general secretary Turgut Alas echoed the call, urging the Democratic Party (DP) and YDP to withdraw from the coalition to trigger an early general election. Alas criticised the current government's handling of alleged corruption, bribery and contract irregularities, and warned that holding local and general elections on the same day could lead to chaos and high numbers of invalid votes.
