Northern Cyprus police seize 6 tons of smuggled lamb meat

Authorities in Northern Cyprus have arrested a second suspect following the ‘Karkas Operation,’ an investigation into the illegal smuggling of over 6 tons of lamb meat from Southern Cyprus.

Police intercepted a refrigerated truck on the Nicosia-Demirhan highway carrying 5,880 kilograms of prohibited lamb carcasses, valued at approximately 7.9 million Turkish Lira. Following the initial arrest of businessman İ. K., a second suspect, P. B., was also taken into custody. Investigations revealed the two individuals acted in partnership to transport the meat.

Subsequent searches of cold storage facilities in Tepebaşı and butcher shops in the Kyrenia region uncovered additional meat products bearing unauthorized seals. Police seized various cuts of lamb, including legs and ribs, which were not officially stamped by the TRNC Veterinary Department. The investigation into the smuggling ring remains ongoing.
