Golden Horn pollution highlighted during World Nature Conservation Day dive
On 28 July, for World Nature Conservation Day, an environmental awareness dive was organised in Istanbul’s Golden Horn (Haliç). AK Party Istanbul Environment and City Policies Deputy Chair Zakire Nurdoğan Yüzbaşıoğlu reported that underwater visibility was only about 30 centimetres and that divers encountered thick mud and limited sight, describing the conditions as “impossible for life”. She called for immediate comprehensive bottom‑cleaning and broader rehabilitation of the waterway, noting that while the area had improved during former mayor Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s tenure, recent rain has revived odor problems. Yüzbaşıoğlu also alleged that cleaning vessels (İSTAÇ) arrived to harass the event, underscoring the urgency of action to restore the ecosystem for future generations.
