Northern Cyprus to launch new high-level addiction combat strategy
At the Northern Cyprus Addiction Combat Symposium, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced a new era in the fight against addiction. He emphasized that addiction is a major societal threat affecting families and social stability, requiring a unified state policy rather than fragmented efforts.
To strengthen the institutional response, a new high-level structure will be formed under the coordination of the Prime Ministry. Prime Minister Üstel will chair this body, which will include representatives from relevant ministries and public institutions to ensure decisions are implemented and results are measured. The strategy will expand beyond substance abuse to address digital addiction, illegal betting, and gambling.
Currently, the Drug Combat Commission has provided services to 25,415 individuals and their families. Support includes the 1191 Addiction Counseling and Support Line, which operates 24/7, and social integration services. Additionally, steps are being taken to establish a 16-bed AMATEM facility to enhance treatment capabilities.
