Northern Endurance Partnership begins North Sea carbon storage pipeline installation

The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) has commenced a major offshore installation campaign in the Southern North Sea. Saipem’s Castorone, one of the world’s largest pipelay vessels, has arrived to begin laying a 136km pipeline.

This infrastructure is designed to connect industrial sites in Teesside and the Humber to the Endurance storage site beneath the North Sea. Once operational, the pipeline will facilitate the transportation and permanent storage of millions of tonnes of captured CO₂ emissions, supporting the UK’s transition to net zero and the development of the East Coast Cluster.

In an effort to minimize environmental impact during construction, the Castorone will be powered by approximately 3,000 tonnes of marine biofuel. Additionally, Sonardyne’s environmental monitoring technology will be utilized to gather seabed data and verify the long-term safety of the carbon storage site.
