Northern France schools face strike and teacher assault amid rising tensions
On Monday 22 June 2026, staff at the Collège Jean‑Jaurès in Calais announced a strike to protest chronic understaffing, demanding the reinstatement of an assistant principal position and additional education assistants. The teachers plan to gather in front of the school at 10 a.m., while pupils will still be welcomed inside.
In the same region, a teacher identified as Pandora Demit was physically assaulted outside her home in Saint‑Maximin by a parent of a student. Union representatives from the CGT, FSU and Sud Éducation condemned the attack and called for a solidarity rally at the Lycée Maurice‑Janetti at 6 p.m. on the same day, demanding protection for educators and a response from the Ministry of Education.
Both incidents highlight growing tensions in French secondary schools over staffing shortages and safety concerns, prompting coordinated union actions across northern France.
