Northern Greece economic development driven by mining and port investments
Northern Greece is positioned as a potential strategic hub for production and exports in Southeast Europe, driven by a resilient manufacturing base and a strong agri-food sector. Key to this development is the expansion of the Port of Thessaloniki's 6th Pier, an initiative of national importance that requires integrated road and rail connections to maximize its impact on international trade.
In the mining sector, the Skouries investment represents a major economic driver. Hellenic Gold's total investment program in the Kassandra mines exceeds $3 billion, with the Skouries project alone surpassing $2 billion. During the construction phase, the project employed over 3,000 workers and activated a wide network of suppliers in East Halkidiki. As the mine enters its production phase, it is expected to create stable, high-skilled jobs for engineers and technicians. The project is projected to generate significant fiscal benefits, including over €4 billion in procurement, €800 million in mining fees, and €1.4 billion in public revenue.
