Northern Illinois Transit Authority begins regional oversight

The Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) has officially commenced operations, assuming regional oversight of public transit for Chicago and its surrounding six-county area. The new agency takes over coordination and accountability duties from the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), overseeing the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace.

NITA was established to address significant financial challenges facing the regional transit system. Following the expiration of federal COVID-19 support and shifting commuting patterns, the system faced projected budget gaps. To stabilize the network, legislation provides NITA with over $1 billion in annual funding, sourced from motor fuel sales tax revenue and a 0.25% increase in the regional sales tax.

While the governance structure is changing, daily operations for commuters are expected to remain largely consistent in the immediate term. Existing services, including free and discounted fare programs, will continue. The agency's long-term goals focus on improving service reliability, accessibility, and coordination to support regional economic development.
