Northern Illinois Transit Authority hosts outreach for regional service improvements
The Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) held an open house at Chicago Union Station to engage with the public regarding regional transit initiatives. Following the implementation of the Northern Illinois Transit Act in June, the agency is transitioning from the Regional Transportation Authority to take greater control over transit operations, public safety, and planning for the CTA, Metra, and Pace.
Key initiatives discussed include the development of ‘NITA Hubs,’ which aim to improve inter-agency connections through better signage and unified real-time arrival displays. Long-term goals involve synchronizing schedules to reduce transfer wait times and deploying transit ambassadors to assist riders.
Additionally, the CTA is conducting a bus service improvement survey, available online through November 30, to gather input on increasing bus speeds, expanding service hours, and implementing new bus priority infrastructure. This feedback will be submitted to NITA as the agency prepares to assume full service planning responsibilities in 2027.
