Northern Ireland risks missing 2030 energy strategy targets
The Stormont Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has warned that Northern Ireland is at risk of failing to meet its 2030 energy strategy targets. The committee's report highlights that policy uncertainty and unclear delivery timelines are actively deterring external investment, with capital potentially being redirected to Great Britain, Ireland, and other European markets.
The 2021 strategy aims for full decarbonization by 2050 and seeks to source at least 80 percent of electricity from renewable energy, targeting a £2 billion green economy. Despite £124 million in public funding being allocated to energy programs since 2020, the PAC identified significant weaknesses in implementation.
To address these issues, the committee issued 11 recommendations, including the need for funded plans to tackle grid infrastructure and energy storage constraints. Committee chair Daniel McCrossan emphasized that the government must create stable conditions to prevent investment from moving elsewhere, while deputy chair Tom Buchanan noted that the next four years are critical for delivering measurable results.
