Northern lights visible across central and southern Netherlands

The aurora borealis has been increasingly visible across the central and southern regions of the Netherlands, including cities such as Amsterdam, Zeist, Apeldoorn, and Groningen. This phenomenon is linked to solar cycle 25, which reached its peak around 2024/2025. During this period, solar eruptions send high-speed plasma toward Earth, causing geomagnetic storms that can make the northern lights visible even in populated areas.

According to the KNMI, such high visibility occurs approximately one to two times per year. While the frequency of these sightings may decrease in the coming years as the solar cycle progresses, clear skies and strong geomagnetic activity remain the primary requirements for viewing the phenomenon.
