Northern Lights illuminate much of the United Kingdom

The Aurora Borealis illuminated large portions of the United Kingdom on Friday and Saturday evenings, with sightings appearing much further south than usual. While typically confined to the Arctic Circle and northern Scotland, the lights were visible in southern regions including Devon, Hampshire, and Kent.

The phenomenon was driven by intense solar activity, specifically coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that released charged particles toward Earth. These particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field and atmospheric gases; oxygen produces green and red hues, while nitrogen creates blue and purple colors.

The Met Office has indicated that sightings could continue through Tuesday, provided skies remain clear. Forecaster Greg Dewhurst noted that while displays might be weaker in some areas on Sunday, they could strengthen again by Monday night. Experts suggest 2026 is a peak year for such sightings due to the sun's heightened activity in its 11-year cycle.
