North Macedonia tourism rises as travelers seek uncrowded Balkan escape

Tourism in North Macedonia is gaining momentum as visitors look for alternatives to the crowded Greek resorts. In 2025 the country welcomed roughly 900,000 tourists, a 7 % increase over the previous year, and low‑cost airlines have added more direct flights to its main cities.

About 80 % of the nation is covered by mountains and lakes, offering a range of outdoor activities. Key attractions highlighted include the UNESCO‑listed Lake Ohrid, the dramatic Matka Canyon near Skopje, Mavrovo National Park and the historic town of Bitola. The growing interest is described as a chance to experience scenic beauty and cultural heritage without the mass‑tourism pressure found elsewhere in the region.
