Northern Maine Medical Center faces emergency nurse resignations

Six registered nurses have resigned from the emergency department at Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent, with more staff reportedly seeking other employment. The resignations follow a long-running dispute between the hospital's management and the nurses' bargaining unit, represented by the Maine State Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee.

Nurses have described the hospital's work environment as “awful toxic” and “not healthy to patients,” claiming that current conditions put their professional licenses at risk. In a letter delivered to CEO Jeff Zewe, staff detailed concerns regarding a hostile atmosphere and a lack of communication from administration. Some staff members noted that the departures were preventable and driven by frustration with leadership and patient safety concerns.

Hospital spokeswoman Pam Sime stated that the departures were due to staff moving out of the area or pursuing other opportunities. The management team, which also oversees Houlton Regional Hospital, has been in negotiations with the union for two years, having recently ratified a three-year contract in May.
