Northern Michigan defeats Miami 3-0 in hockey season opener

Northern Michigan University opened its 50th season with a 3-0 shutout victory against the Miami University RedHawks at the Berry Events Center. Sophomore goaltender Oliver Auyeung-Ashton recorded 30 saves to secure the win.

The Wildcats' scoring was driven by freshmen, with Coster Dunn netting a shorthanded goal in the second period following assists from Mathew Ward and Ian Engel. Darik Olson added a power-play goal later in the period, assisted by Joe Schiller and Branden Piku. Ian Engel sealed the victory with an unassisted empty-net goal during a power play in the final minutes.

Despite facing significant adversity, including injuries to two forwards and a high volume of penalties, Northern Michigan maintained a perfect 6-for-6 record while shorthanded. Head coach Dave Shyiak credited the team's ability to battle through fatigue and defensive pressure.
