Northern Michigan University athletic teams faced losses in their recent football and lacrosse matchups.
In football, the Northern Michigan Wildcats lost their season opener 41-19 to the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons. Despite the defeat, NMU quarterbacks Liam Oczkowski and Duke Shovald combined for 272 passing yards. Running back Noah Dobert contributed 80 yards and a touchdown. The Dragons controlled the line of scrimmage, limiting NMU to a single sack.
In lacrosse, the Wildcats fell 20-7 to the No. 3 ranked Indianapolis Greyhounds. NMU remained competitive in the first half, trailing only 8-6 at halftime behind strong goaltending from Lauren Esposito, who recorded 12 saves. However, Indianapolis scored eight consecutive goals in the second half to secure the win. Josie Lakosky led NMU with five goals, bringing her season total to 91.
