Northern Morocco faces environmental warning over Oriental hornet spread

The Observatory for the Protection of the Environment and Historical Monuments in Tangier has issued an urgent warning regarding the widespread spread of the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) in northern Morocco. The insect has been observed in several areas, including Tangier, Tetouan, M'diq, and Fnideq.

Scientific studies conducted in 2025 and published in 2026 confirmed the presence and stability of both the Oriental hornet and the European hornet in the northern region. The Observatory highlighted significant risks to the beekeeping sector, noting that these predatory insects can kill honeybees, stress colonies, and potentially transmit bee diseases.

Beyond the impact on agriculture, the hornet poses a public health risk. The species tends to nest in crevices, cavities, and human structures near urban areas. Its stings can be particularly dangerous for individuals with hypersensitivity to insect venom. The Observatory is calling for the establishment of a regional early warning mechanism involving local authorities, scientists, universities, and beekeeping professionals to monitor and manage the spread through scientific methods rather than indiscriminate control.
