Northern Super League expands with new investment and team

The Northern Super League (NSL), Canada's professional women's soccer league, is entering its second year with significant expansion and investment plans. Co-founded by former national team player Diana Matheson, the six-team league announced it will add a new franchise from Winnipeg in 2027.

Financial backing for the league has increased substantially. London-based investment firm APEX has pledged up to $30 million, supplementing a $5.45 million commitment previously made by the Canadian government. The league's current roster of teams includes the Halifax Tides, Montreal Roses, Calgary Wild, Ottawa Rapid, AFC Toronto, and Vancouver Rise.

Professional midfielder Quinn, who previously played in the American NWSL, noted that the NSL has established high standards regarding resources and attendance. The league's growth follows a global trend in women's football, mirroring expansions seen in the English Women’s Super League and the American NWSL.
