Northern Territory trials 130 km/h highway speed limits

The Northern Territory is conducting a six-month trial of 130 km/h speed limits on sections of the Stuart Highway at Hayes Creek and Wycliffe Well. This follows a previous reduction of limits to 100 km/h in 2013 due to safety concerns regarding roadhouses and pedestrians.

The trial has reignited discussions regarding whether sparsely populated regions in New South Wales, such as the Riverina, could safely implement similar increases. While a NSW parliamentary inquiry has previously examined raising limits above the current 110 km/h maximum, experts suggest implementation may be politically challenging.

Former Griffith Council transport expert Simon Croce noted that road fatalities on country roads are often caused by inattention, boredom, or driver frustration rather than speed itself. Some motorists have also submitted support for the change, suggesting that drivers in the Northern Territory generally adapt to road conditions even with higher limits.
