Northland free dog desexing programme tackles stray litters and kiwi protection
The Best Dog Trust has launched a free dog desexing and microchipping programme for owners in Kaipara, Wellsford and Bream Bay, covering costs of more than NZ$450. Eligibility is limited to applicants with a Community Services Card or genuine financial hardship, with priority for medium and large dogs such as bully breeds, farm dogs and Shar Peis. Participating veterinary clinics are located across Whangārei, Ruakākā, Waipū, Maungatūroto, Ruawai and Wellsford. The initiative, supported by SPCA New Zealand, Whangarei District Council and Morris & Morris Funerals, aims to reduce unwanted dogs and puppies in the three districts.
Separately, former veterinarian and kiwi‑avoidance trainer Lesley Baigent will give a free talk in Mangawhai on August 2, urging dog owners to understand canine behaviour to protect native kiwi birds. Dogs are a leading cause of adult kiwi deaths in Northland, where wild kiwi life expectancy is only 14 years. Baigent emphasises responsible control, such as keeping dogs indoors at night and recognising behaviour cues, to help safeguard the threatened bird population.
