Northland Properties Corporation fined for asbestos risks at Williams Lake Sandman Hotel

Northland Properties Corporation has been issued a $624,051.48 penalty following a WorkSafeBC investigation into asbestos risks at the Sandman Hotel in Williams Lake. A stop-work order was issued after inspectors discovered improperly handled asbestos-contaminated waste, including baseboards, left in an open garbage bin.

The inspection also revealed significant visible mould on walls and insulation, as well as drywall debris on floors and carpets. WorkSafeBC reported that the company failed to communicate hazardous material exposure risks to renovation workers and hotel staff. Furthermore, none of the workers involved had the required asbestos training or certification.

WorkSafeBC concluded that anyone accessing the renovation area was likely exposed to asbestos and other hazardous materials, noting that cross-contamination of the hotel interior was probable via footwear and clothing. This incident follows previous asbestos-related safety violations by Northland Properties Corporation at other Sandman Hotel locations in Kelowna, Richmond, Revelstoke, and Vancouver.
