Northland regional authorities implement biosecurity and restoration measures
The Northland Regional Council has installed an automated gate at the Lake Taharoa boat ramp in Kaipara to bolster biosecurity. The approximately $53,000 installation aims to prevent the spread of invasive freshwater pests, specifically the invasive freshwater clam, which poses risks to both the environment and agricultural infrastructure like water reticulation systems.
To access the lake, boaters must now complete a self-certification process—ideally 48 hours in advance—to obtain a PIN for the gate. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Kaipara District Council, Te Roroa, Te Kuihi hapū, the Department of Conservation, and the Taharoa Domain Working Group.
Separately, the New Zealand Government has announced a $3 million grant from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to support the restoration of Lake Ōmāpere. This funding will facilitate enabling works, including regulatory approvals, road access, and the construction of a weir to control water levels. The project, led by Lake Ōmāpere GP Limited on behalf of the Lake Ōmāpere Trust, seeks to improve regional water resilience and economic development.
