Northland Regional Council offers free bus travel for World Car Free Day

The Northland Regional Council is offering free travel on all CityLink, SchoolLink, and BusLink services on Tuesday, 22 September, to observe World Car Free Day. The initiative aims to encourage residents to utilize public transport, reduce short car trips, and experience the region’s bus network.

The one-day free fare offer applies to all CityLink and SchoolLink Whangārei services, as well as various BusLink routes including Far North Link (Mangonui-Kaitaia and Kaitaia services), Hokianga Link, Mid North Link, and Hikurangi Link.

Regional Transport Committee Chair Joe Carr stated that the initiative provides an opportunity for those who do not typically use the bus to try the service. He noted that reducing private vehicle use offers environmental benefits such as improved air quality and lower emissions, while also helping to keep Northland communities connected.
