NorthPoint Development offers $10,000 grants for Pennsylvania AI data center
NorthPoint Development has proposed a $45 million initiative to secure approval for a 1,300-acre AI data center near Hazle, Pennsylvania. The plan includes offering each household a $10,000 grant, a move the company's chief marketing officer described as “pretty radical and pretty leading-edge.” However, many local residents have rejected the offer, labeling the payments as a “bribe” and expressing concerns regarding water usage, pollution, and potential impacts on property values.
Beyond individual grants, the developer has planned an additional $120 million over 15 years for community projects and local police funding. While local opposition persists, broader economic arguments suggest data center development can benefit residents. Data from states like California, Indiana, and Georgia indicate that the massive, steady demand from hyperscale data centers can help spread fixed infrastructure costs, potentially leading to lower electricity rates for average ratepayers.
