Northrop Grumman completes first autonomous flight of YFQ-48A Talon Blue
Northrop Grumman has successfully completed the first fully autonomous flight of the YFQ-48A Talon Blue in Mojave, California. The flight program demonstrated end-to-end autonomy, covering taxiing, takeoff, in-flight maneuvers, and landing without human intervention during the aerial phase.
Designed as a “Loyal Wingman” or Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), the Talon Blue is intended to operate alongside advanced fighters such as the F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor. The platform is built to serve as a multi-mission force multiplier, capable of performing high-risk tasks including electronic warfare, reconnaissance, target designation, and missile deployment in contested airspace.
To meet modern defense requirements for rapid deployment and large-scale production, the aircraft utilizes a heavily modular configuration. This design aims to reduce component counts, decrease weight by 50%, and shorten manufacturing time by 30% compared to traditional platforms.
