Boeing wins $20B Navy contract for F/A-XX sixth-generation fighter

Boeing has secured a major defense contract valued at over $20 billion to develop the F/A-XX, the U.S. Navy’s next-generation, sixth-generation carrier-based fighter. This program, part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) initiative, is designed to replace the aging F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler fleets. The F/A-XX is expected to feature advanced stealth, increased operational range, and open mission systems architecture, allowing it to operate alongside Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) unmanned systems.

This award marks a significant strategic shift for Boeing, as the company now holds contracts for both the Navy’s F/A-XX and the Air Force’s F-47 sixth-generation fighter program. To support these massive projects, Boeing is investing in a large, secure, all-digital manufacturing facility in St. Louis, Missouri.

In a separate development, the U.S. Air Force has ordered four MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters as part of the program’s first full-rate production lot. This brings the total number of Grey Wolves under contract to 42, intended to support the security of land-based nuclear missile fields.
