Northwest China floods trigger mass evacuations in Shaanxi and Gansu

Heavy rainfall and flooding in northwest China have triggered mass evacuations across multiple provinces. In Shaanxi province, more than 25,000 people were evacuated within a 24-hour period, contributing to a total of over 140,000 evacuations in the province since July 30. The flooding has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, bridges, power lines, and communications systems.

In neighboring Gansu province, more than 4,500 people were evacuated from Longnan City following a Level II flood-control emergency response. Heavy rains in Longnan damaged approximately 3,303 km of roads and disrupted nearly 500 others. Flash floods in Gansu have already resulted in at least 25 deaths and 23 injuries.

Emergency responders and rescue crews have been deployed to clear vulnerable areas and deliver relief supplies. The region faces ongoing challenges as authorities warn of continued heavy rain and the potential impact of Typhoon Dolphin, which is expected to reach China's eastern seaboard between August 9 and August 10.
