Northwest Indiana faces prolonged power outages following severe storms
Severe storms and hurricane-force winds have caused widespread power outages across Northwest Indiana, leaving tens of thousands of residents without electricity for over a week. The utility company NIPSCO reported that the storm, which began around August 11, initially affected approximately 301,000 customers. While hundreds of thousands of outages have been resolved, tens of thousands remain in the dark, with significant concentrations in Lake County and the city of Gary.
In Gary, Mayor Eddie Melton has declared a local disaster emergency to address the aftermath of the storm. Residents have reported significant challenges, including spoiled food, lack of air conditioning, and difficulties accessing basic necessities. The damage to the electrical infrastructure is extensive; NIPSCO officials noted that repairing the grid requires the replacement or repair of roughly 300 poles and 44 transmission poles in the Gary area alone.
Restoration efforts are ongoing but complicated by the scale of the damage and recent weather conditions. In some areas, including parts of Gary, full power restoration is not expected until August 25. Beyond Indiana, similar severe weather has impacted other regions, including Arkansas and New Jersey, while heavy rains caused flash flooding in parts of Ohio.
