Northwest utilities face rising costs from wildfire risks

Wildfire risks are significantly increasing costs for utilities in the Pacific Northwest, a financial burden that consumer advocates warn will likely be passed on to electricity customers. PacifiCorp recently agreed to a $2.2 billion settlement to resolve approximately 90% of claims related to fires in Oregon and California that burned nearly 300,000 acres of public land.

This financial pressure follows the precedent set by California-based Pacific Gas & Electric, which filed for bankruptcy years ago due to tens of billions of dollars in potential liabilities from deadly fires. To avoid similar outcomes, regional utilities are investing millions annually into wildfire mitigation and fire-proofing approximately 20,000 miles of transmission lines.

While state commissions are set to review these mitigation projects, concerns remain regarding their capacity to oversee the spending. In Washington state, lawmakers and climate advocates are examining ways to protect residents from the rising costs of wildfire damage and grid hardening efforts.
