Northwestern Ontario to adopt permanent daylight saving time
The Ontario government has announced plans to allow Northwestern Ontario regions west of the 90th meridian to observe permanent daylight saving time. The regulatory change is intended to align these areas with Manitoba, which recently decided to stop alternating between standard and daylight saving time.
This move aims to improve regional uniformity and support economic, healthcare, and educational connections between Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba. Local officials noted that the change would prevent time discrepancies for residents in border areas like Kenora, which currently faces a choice between staying on Eastern Time or aligning with Winnipeg.
Public support for the shift is high; surveys in the region indicated between 90% and 94% approval. Residents identified commuting, medical appointments, and business operations as the primary areas that would benefit from the alignment. The change is expected to take effect by November 1.
