Northwestern University engineers develop stealth drone prototype
Engineers at Northwestern University in the United States have developed an experimental drone prototype named ‘Phantom Twist’ that achieves near-invisibility to the human eye through high-speed rotation.
Unlike traditional stealth technology that relies on light-reflecting coatings or digital camouflage, this drone utilizes the biological principle of ‘motion blur.’ By rotating its entire body in the opposite direction of its single propeller at approximately 25 revolutions per second, the drone prevents the human eye from distinguishing its distinct contours or parts. This rapid movement causes the drone to appear as a blurred, semi-transparent image that blends into the background.
To prevent the formation of a solid silhouette during rotation, researchers used artificial intelligence and computer modeling to test roughly 20,000 different configurations. This process allowed them to optimize the placement of components—such as the motor, battery, and electronic boards—at varying heights and angles to ensure they do not overlap into a recognizable shape. Visual assessments indicate that the Phantom Twist is approximately ten times less noticeable than a standard quadcopter drone.
