Norway advocates for stronger UN amid global funding crisis

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has emphasized the critical importance of the United Nations amidst rising international rivalry and global unrest. As the UN General Assembly begins in New York, Støre expressed a commitment to strengthening the multilateral system, respecting international law, and protecting human rights.

The UN is currently facing a severe financial crisis, characterized by acute funding shortages and deteriorating facilities at its headquarters. Norway’s UN Ambassador, Merete Fjeld Brattested, noted the visible decay of the organization, citing examples such as worn-out furniture in the General Assembly hall. The crisis is attributed to member states, specifically the United States, failing to pay full membership dues on time.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued warnings regarding the budget situation, stating that member states must meet their financial obligations or the organization will be forced to undergo fundamental revisions. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has also signaled concern, warning that the neglect of the diplomatic heart of the organization sends a poor message to the world.
