Norway: AI usage in health and Meta data privacy concerns

A recent survey by the Norwegian Directorate of Health reveals that 46 percent of the Norwegian population has used artificial intelligence for health advice in the last twelve months. Among individuals under 30, the usage rate rises to 59 percent. Health and Care Minister Jan Christian Vestre stated that these figures highlight the urgent need for a public AI service to provide secure and quality-assured answers. The government aims to launch a dialogue-based public AI health service by 2027.

Separately, the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) has raised concerns regarding Meta’s use of Facebook and Instagram posts and images to train its generative AI models. While Meta argues that an opt-out mechanism is sufficient, officials note that the use of personal data generally requires voluntary consent. Additionally, Meta was recently prohibited by a district court from implementing updated commercial terms for business accounts after Norwegian media outlets successfully challenged the company’s ability to scrape content, including material behind paywalls.
