Norway allocates 112 million NOK to support kindergarten teacher training
The Norwegian government is providing 112 million NOK to support over 1,900 kindergarten employees seeking further education. Each participant receives 60,000 NOK, which can be used for substitutes, travel, accommodation, books, or other study-related equipment.
The program targets current employees, such as assistants and child workers, allowing them to study while maintaining their employment. This includes workplace-based training programs that can be completed part-time over four years. Minister of Education Kari Nessa Nordtun noted a significant need for more qualified kindergarten teachers.
Despite these efforts, debate continues regarding the retention of qualified staff. Recent data indicates that in 2023, only 49.2 percent of trained kindergarten teachers actually worked in the sector, with many choosing other professions. Critics argue that low wages and working conditions may be driving professionals away, leading to a reliance on exemptions from educational requirements for pedagogical leadership roles.
