Norway allocates 246.7 million NOK for green fast boat technology
The Norwegian government has proposed allocating 246.7 million NOK in the national budget to accelerate the development of green fast boats. Climate and Environment Minister Sigrun Aasland stated that this investment aims to promote necessary technology and test solutions required to meet future emission requirements for high-speed vessels.
Unlike electric ferries that cover short distances, fast boats present greater technological challenges due to higher speeds, longer distances, and the weight of battery packs. Since 2021, the state has invested 1 billion NOK in the program, supporting electrification projects in areas such as the Trondheimsfjord and Sunnhordland routes.
Experts from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) suggest that Norway possesses the maritime expertise, including foil technology and battery systems, to develop zero-emission passenger catamarans capable of carrying 150-250 passengers at speeds of 20-35 knots within five years. Such advancements are critical to meeting Norway's goal of reducing domestic shipping emissions by 50 percent by 2030.
