Norway and Canada to strengthen defense and Arctic cooperation

Norway and Canada are moving to strengthen their bilateral defense and industrial cooperation following a meeting in Ottawa between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. A central component of this enhanced partnership is the acquisition of identical Type 212CD submarines by Norway, Canada, and Germany, which is expected to bolster NATO's ability to monitor maritime areas in the Arctic.

Beyond naval assets, the two nations intend to pursue an expanded defense agreement. Prime Minister Støre described this approach as a ‘hedging strategy’ (garderingsstrategi) to deepen ties with close allies alongside existing NATO frameworks. The cooperation is set to extend into several other sectors, including polar research, coast guard collaboration, critical mineral mapping, space technology, and artificial intelligence.
