Norway and Russia reach 2027 Barents Sea fishing agreement
Norway and Russia have reached an agreement regarding fishing quotas in the Barents Sea for 2027. The deal, finalized during negotiations in Istanbul, aims to ensure the sustainable management of shared fish stocks.
A key component of the agreement is a 14 percent increase in the total Northeast Arctic cod quota, rising to 325,000 tons for 2027. This marks the first increase in cod quotas in six years. Norway’s specific share is set at 156,997 tons. Additionally, the quota for haddock will see an 18 percent increase.
Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Affairs, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, noted that while negotiations were challenging this year—partly due to measures against two Russian fishing companies—the agreement remains vital for coastal communities and economic activity. The management strategy continues to focus on the long-term recovery and sustainability of these populations.
