Norway authorities issue emergency preparedness guidance
In observance of Emergency Preparedness Week from October 26 to November 1, the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) is advising citizens on how to manage potential disruptions to water and power supplies. Authorities recommend that every individual store approximately 20 liters of drinking water to ensure a one-week supply for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene.
To prepare containers, the DSB suggests cleaning bottles or jugs thoroughly with soap and water, followed by a rinse with a solution of two caps of household chlorine per 10 liters of water. Once cleaned, containers should be filled with cold tap water.
Beyond physical supplies, there is an emphasis on social preparedness. The DSB encourages citizens to identify a ‘preparedness friend’—a person who can provide practical assistance, information, and emotional support during a crisis. Recent data from the Children's Ombudsman indicates that a majority of young people are eager to take on supportive roles and contribute to community resilience during emergencies.
